Pfizer has launched a new advertising campaign to encourage consumers to use the brand-name drug Nexium, as part of the US pharmaceutical industry's battle against counterfeit Nexium.
The campaign, which was announced on Friday, will target adults 18 to 65 years old and will aim to encourage them to buy the drug over the counter and through online sellers.
"We are excited to have this new initiative to raise awareness of the safety and effectiveness of the drug over the counter," Pfizer Chairman and CEO Henry McKinnell said in a statement.
The company is also launching a consumer education campaign to educate consumers about how to purchase the drug safely and responsibly.
"Advertising to help consumers make healthier choices is the right thing to do. We have a lot of people who are struggling, but they are not struggling with Nexium," McKinnell said.
The advertising campaign, which is aimed at the consumers, will also help educate the general public about the dangers of using the drug, and about what to do if you have a heart problem, according to the company.
The advertising will be posted on sites and websites that promote Nexium, such as the online drugstore eDrugstore.com. It will be distributed across the US by eDrugstore, a website that sells a variety of different products including Nexium.
The campaign will be launched in over 100 countries, including in Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
In addition, Nexium is the first prescription drug that a US health care provider will prescribe for a condition known as "heart disease" because it is linked to a high risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart problems.
E-commerce giant eDrugstore said that it has received more than $300 million in marketing contracts from US pharmaceutical companies, with a future offering of up to $1 billion in potential marketing could be possible.
