"We are pleased to have completed the process to have a product to market that is as effective and safe as possible," said AstraZeneca's chairman and chief executive, Mark Merck, in a statement.
Nexium, which treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is the first anti-acid gastroesophageal-lifestyle (GLP-1) drug to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients who have experienced frequent heartburn.
"As we said earlier, we have put in place a system that ensures that patients don't get heartburn, we don't recommend that patients need to go to the hospital to get acid-suppressing medications to lower their acid levels, or that they need to take a drug with them that we can't control at home," said Dr. Shkreli.
"The fact that this is the first approval for GLP-1 drugs is good news for AstraZeneca."
In the first quarter of this year, AstraZeneca's revenues increased 15% to $1.5 billion, compared with a year earlier with $600 million. The company was also up 14% to $1.7 billion from the year before.
The company's sales growth in the first quarter of this year was offset by a loss of $900 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2009. The company's revenue rose 7% to $2.9 billion in the quarter, compared with a year earlier with $1.9 billion.
Shares of AstraZeneca were trading higher today at $31.59, or $23.58 per share.
